Energy efficiency is a key pillar of Boels’ sustainability ambitions and is embedded in our daily operations across the organisation. Through continuous efforts to reduce energy consumption, improve processes and use resources more consciously, we work in line with our sustainability policy and long-term targets. This approach was once again externally validated in November 2025, when Boels successfully renewed its ISO 50001 certification for energy management for all entities in the Netherlands and Germany.
Strong awareness across depots and headquarters
Boels has been ISO 50001 certified since 2016 and continues to strengthen its energy management approach across the organisation. Energy-efficient working practices are well embedded at both depots and headquarters, with teams demonstrating a clear understanding of how daily decisions influence overall energy consumption.
Carmen ten Berge, Group Sustainability Manager: “I would like to recognise and thank our depot colleagues in the Netherlands and Germany. It is clear that the guidance shared from headquarters is being applied effectively in daily operations, and that colleagues understand the impact their actions have on energy use.”
The demonstrated awareness at both depots and headquarters shows that energy efficiency is truly embedded
Energy management embedded in core operations
Energy management is firmly integrated into Boels’ core operational and strategic processes. Across key functions, there is clear alignment between policy and practice, supported by focused training, strong data monitoring and active management oversight. As a result, our energy management system continues to deliver measurable improvements and supports our broader sustainability and efficiency goals.
Fleet optimisation as a key driver
Vehicle usage plays an important role in Boels’ energy footprint. Continuous investments in fleet renewal and utilisation optimisation are therefore essential. Nick Vaasen, Group Head of Vehicle Fleet Management: “Efficient use of vehicles directly influences our energy footprint and fleet strategy. By investing in a younger, cleaner fleet and using Track & Trace data, we reduce unnecessary trips and avoid excessive idling.”

Tangible results in energy reduction
The combined efforts across the organisation are delivering tangible results. In 2024, electricity consumption decreased by 4% in the Netherlands and by 15% in Germany compared to the previous year, while gas consumption was reduced by 2% and 11% respectively. These reductions are supported by structural measures, including the rollout of LED lighting, which now covers approximately 90% of the Dutch property portfolio and around 85% of the German portfolio. In addition, all electricity consumption in both countries is fully covered by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), reinforcing Boels’ commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
Continuing the momentum
Roel Hendriks, Head of Operations Support, reflects on the outcome: “The demonstrated awareness at both depots and headquarters shows that energy efficiency is truly embedded. By staying aligned across all stakeholders, we can continue to drive measurable reductions in energy consumption.”
With the renewed ISO 50001 certification and a strong focus on continuous improvement, Boels continues to strengthen its energy management approach, supporting both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability goals.
