Boels Rental plays a crucial role in the construction of a new traffic bridge in Germany. On the eastern side of Nuremberg, Donges Steeltec is working on the expansion of a busy junction. Two major highways converge here, and due to increasing traffic congestion, additional capacity is needed. That’s why a new 15.000-ton flyover is being built, measuring 588 meters in length and 15 meters in width.
Boels Rental has been actively involved in ensuring the project runs smoothly. With smart solutions, the company helps keep construction on schedule, minimizing traffic disruption and meeting the client’s expectations. The large-scale project in Nuremberg is impressive—the size of the flyover and the unique design of the suspension bridge under construction are remarkable. The German company Donges Steeltec is responsible for the construction. With 150 years of experience, it is one of Germany’s most renowned bridge builders, specializing in large-scale projects like this one.
“This is absolutely a large-scale project, even for us,” says Michael Hansen, assembly engineer at Donges Steeltec he oversees the project. “This project comes with several challenges. The sheer size is impressive, but logistics and minimizing traffic disruption are also key factors. So far, we have been able to tackle these challenges thanks to meticulous planning and reliable partners like Boels. They know exactly what we need to work as efficiently as possible.”
A perfect match
According to Hansen, Boels is an indispensable link in this project. It all started with the proactive approach of Florian Pister, Boels account manager. “We had worked with Boels before, but initially, only a compressor was on-site. Florian regularly visited and explained everything Boels had to offer, both in terms of machinery and services. His enthusiasm and clear explanations convinced us to give him a chance with a specific challenge.”
In bridge construction, precise planning is essential. Midway through the project, post-tensioning of the cables had to be scheduled. This required aerial work platforms with the right height, reach, and weight to minimize traffic disruption. “Together with Florian, we measured everything down to the centimeter. He guided us every step of the way and provided valuable advice. The rest is history. As the project progressed, more and more Boels machines were brought in. Florian’s persistence and clear explanations about the services truly made the difference in our decision to work with Boels.”
Service Is in Boels’ DNA
“Delivering on promises is essential in our customer relationships. That’s what we’ve done from the start, and we will continue to do so,” says Florian Pister, Boels account manager. “For this project, I am the sole point of contact for Boels. This keeps things clear for the client. If there are any last-minute changes, we can quickly deliver the right machines. It’s great to work for a company where ‘customer support’ is truly in our DNA.”
The Right Equipment at the Right Time
The large aerial work platforms recommended by Pister were a perfect fit for the bridge builders’ needs—allowing them to work safely, quickly, and with minimal traffic disruption. “I am very satisfied with the collaboration. What is promised is delivered. Communication lines are short, and if something changes at short notice, the right equipment arrives on-site within one to two days,” says Michael Hansen from Donges Steeltec. “That’s a challenge on our project, where space is limited and thousands of cars and trucks pass through daily. But deliveries run smoothly. The contact with the service department is also excellent. So far, we have had no technical issues—the machines were delivered in top condition.”
Working Together for a Perfect Result
For Donges Steeltec, it is crucial to work safely and efficiently towards the scheduled completion at the end of 2025. Boels plays an important role in this, both in terms of equipment and planning. “The Boels team thinks along with us, delivers on time, and their machines perform exactly as needed. If we can continue working together like this, we will deliver a perfect project. And that’s our goal!”
