Set up a construction site at a location without a power supply with sustainability in mind? Last month, SPIE Nederland started work on the Amaliahaven high-voltage substation on Maasvlakte 2. Boels supplied sustainable units and a temporary power supply for this project.
Work at Maasvlakte 2
TenneT commissioned SPIE to carry out work on the high-voltage substation at Maasvlakte 2. This switching substation will collect the power that comes ashore via wind farms in the future. The green power in question will be used in hydrogen plant in the Port of Rotterdam. Noteltiers: ‘So, the Amaliahaven will become an indispensable link in the energy transition.’ The substation is expected to be operational at the end of 2026.
Sustainable power supply
Laurent Noteltiers, Project Manager at SPIE Nederland, says: ‘The excellent solution Boels came up with means that we do have power now. Boels also shared its thoughts and ideas about the positioning of the units on site, where space is limited. Noteltiers: ‘There was supposed to be a permanent power supply, but we don’t have that yet. Boels responded effectively and modified the design.’
An innovative solution was chosen: a battery pack as the primary power supply, connected to a 250-kWh generator that kicks in when the battery pack has to be recharged. This energy-efficient solution provides the chain of units (which consist of facilities for staff) with the power they needs. Noteltiers: ‘Even the units themselves are a sustainable design and have excellent insulation value.’

Solution to a lack of space
The original plan was to position the units in a two-high row. ‘But then we found that we had just limited space on site. Boels solved the problem by stacking the units. We now have a structure that can stay in place in the years ahead,’ Noteltiers says. The modular units have been positioned in a three-layer set-up instead of two.
Karry Engels, Key Account Manager for Site Accommodation at Boels Rental: The work was carried out and completed in just three weeks. Boels’ careful planning and communication enabled it to bring all the different disciplines together and the project ran very smoothly. This was one of the reasons why we were able to meet the tight deadline.
SPIE and Boels working closely together
SPIE and Boels are working closely together with just one point of contact to make communication easier. Engels stresses that Boels has taken responsibility for site accommodation, leaving SPIE to focus fully on the project: ‘We work so well together because we listen to each other and lines of communication are short. This puts us in a position to make life easier for the client and present it with appropriate solutions.
