One of the tallest towers in the region, the Heldentoren, is being established along the Knokke-Heist coastline. This extraordinary building requires work to be carried out in very limited space between the existing buildings. Boels Rental was called in to handle the vertical transport of people and materials. The tower will rise up to 70 metres and it contains 20 floors. That is why transporting to great heights is essential for this project.
About the project
The Heldentoren will be located on the former site of the renowned Grand Hotel Casino Kursaal, which was completely destroyed during the Second World War. Such an exceptional architectural structure will certainly be at home there. The reflected daylight from the distinctive curved design and glass façade of the brand-new Heldentoren will instantly attract attention. The total project consists of two residential towers, the highest of which will consist of 20 floors. The second tower will have five floors. A third building will be used as a hospitality pavilion. The project is scheduled for completion in 2023. The biggest challenges facing the project are mainly the height of the highest tower combined with the limited space for construction.
About the collaboration
Several lifts are required to ensure that vertical transport can run smoothly. For this reason, we will install two passenger/goods lifts and one goods/construction lift at the site. The contractor Eiffage Vlaanderen will build the central tower in 14 days using a slip forming system. To ensure that personnel can be transported quickly and safely on the slip form platform, we are building the goods lift at the same time as the slip form. Within two weeks, both the slip form and the lift will ultimately reach a height of 67 metres.
Once the central tower has been built, the contractor will start on the surrounding floors. For this construction phase, we advised splitting up the vertical transport between two different lifts. One lift, the shaft construction lift, will be placed in the central tower after the slip form and our first lift have been removed. This special shaft construction lift is completely new to our fleet. Thanks to its closed cage and high speed, the individual subcontractors can make sure their staff get to their workplace quickly and safely. Even when that is on the 20th floor.
In early 2022, we will install a third lift on the outside of the façade in phases. This goods lift will transport the finishing materials to the respective floors during the construction and finishing phases of the project. But this goods lift can also easily be switched to a passenger/goods lift when required.
